St John's Wood

Extension and refurbishment of a large semi-detached house

Extension and internal reconfiguration of a large Grade II-listed semi-detached private home in north London.

Location: St John's Wood
Date: Autumn 2013 to Autumn 2015
Sectors: Residential

This charming late Regency villa had been split into two flats, and our task was to refurbish the fabric and reconfigure it to be one family home, as it had originally been. Like many of the projects we undertake on houses of this age, our aim was to establish a connection between the living spaces of the house and its garden. Prior to modern concepts of outside dining and the use of the garden as a family recreational space, the garden had been seen as a functional area, more to do with washing, drying of laundry etc.

The new family dining room and adjoining kitchen were re-imagined as a glazed pavilion set in the garden, giving access to the terrace and barbeque areas. For this new rear extension and the side extension we used sympathetic hand-made bricks and lead roofs to complement the existing brick and slate villa.
