Timber

Hugh applies hands-on carpentry experience to his architectural practice, focusing on sustainable timber design and historic restoration in the UK.

Hugh grew up in Newfoundland, where his father was an architect who built, amongst other things, several timber-framed and timber clad houses. Hugh worked on site on many of these, helping with carpentry and laying cedar shingles. This first-hand knowledge of nature of timber has been important in the work of the current studio, particularly with the emergence in the UK of timber as an ecologically responsible and increasingly popular building material. The familiarity with timber construction has also been helpful in restoration projects, as a great deal of historic construction in the UK has been timber framed and sometimes timber-clad.
