House in Richmond

Reimagining of a semi-circular house from the nineties that borders Richmond Park.

We refurbished and extended this remarkable 1990’s house. It had been built by clients for whom we did work on a nearby smaller, single-storey house into which they were moving. They kindly recommended us to the buyers of their previous house.  Over the thirty years they had lived in it, they had developed a truly spectacular garden and the semi-circular plan they had devised for their purpose-built house made the most of views out onto it.

We built on this original concept, rationalising the plan, adding a large basement and extending the living spaces out to maximise the engagement with the garden.

Much of the new extension and refurbishment was to do with bringing a new materiality to the existing building, giving it a higher level of finish and elegance. The interior already had large areas of lovely exposed brickwork and we extended and enhanced these with purpose made terracotta tiling and polished Belgian fossil marble detailing. Throughout the entire ground floor, we introduced a seamless poured terrazzo floor with embedded shells and flints. This complimented the fossil marble and also solved the headache of how on earth to sensibly lay out a tiled or timber flooring in a semi-circular building.

The success of the project is equally indebted to the vision and design sense of the client and to the expertise of the builders, Lightfoot Projects LLP.

The original hardwood timber windows were refurbished or replaced and thermally upgraded and we used complementary fluted timbers in the joinery of the new interiors with ceilings of slatted white stained pine.
